William Shakespeare is one of the world's greatest artists, and arguably the world's greatest playwright. But we know little about his private life ; a clutch of documents refer to him by name. His baptism, the birth of his children, his purchasing property in Stratford, his being called as a witness in a case of breach of promise - all these and more are on record. However, we have no diaries, no notebooks, no single letter - leave alone a love letter. Did he write to his wife Anne? No record exists, and of the thirty six plays he wrote, there is no original manuscript.
At last here is a character who can unravel some of the mystery - William Shakespeare's father, John. He takes a sympathetic look at Shakespeare the babe in arms, the schoolboy, the lover, the newly married man, the father- turned-actor- turned-playwright.
Not that all your questions will be answered. Didn't Will write somewhere - "It's a wise father that knows his own child!"
